Files carrying a .indd suffix usually are what they say they are, but the suffix is not proof. The INDD file stores links, not the images themselves — moving a layout without its links folder breaks every picture in it.

The structure, briefly
A 16-byte signature followed by version and page-table records; the file is a structured binary document, not a text stream.

What reads this format
Installed options: Adobe InDesign, InCopy (text editing), Adobe Reader (exported PDF only), Polyfil / File Viewer Plus (read-only). None of them have to be the program that made the file: Universal Viewer reads it and writes nothing back.
